Welcome to 2nd Grade!
We are looking forward to your child coming to 2nd grade in the fall. If you have already had children come through 2nd grade, then you probably know what to expect. However, we are hearing that 2nd graders may be taking the end of the year state assessments. Therefore, when they enter 2nd grade, we want them ready. Here is what we want them to work on this summer.
Read, read, and read!
Your child should be reading to you each day. In 2nd grade, we read non-fiction as well as fiction!
If your child still is unsure about vowel sounds work on learning what sound each vowel makes. Sign up for the Summer Reading Program at the library or consider offering a reward or incentive for your child to read this summer. It can be something simple like extra outdoor playtime. We have also attached a reading log for your child to fill out this summer and return to their teacher in August for a special treat.
Math Facts
Practice addition and subtraction facts to 10. If they have mastered to 10 then have them work on math facts to 20.
In second grade, we feel that social courtesy, personal responsibility and fostering independence are as important as academics. Social courtesy refers to how your child acts in social situations. Do they want to help a friend in need or do they just stand back, watch or possibly laugh? Do they use kind words, appropriate manners and are they able to problem solve?
Personal responsibility is about being responsible for belongings including folders, homework, notes, money, lunch boxes and coats. Give your child some responsibility at home this summer like feeding a pet, sweeping a sidewalk, or a cleaning chore that will help them to develop responsibility.
In 2nd grade, children are expected to walk themselves to their classrooms after the first half-day and assume responsibility for their belongings. We also expect 2nd graders to be able to tie their own shoes and manage clothing. Work on this each day during the summer until mastery is obtained. These are a few of the ways you as a parent can help your child to foster independence.
We are looking forward to meeting your child and having them in 2nd grade next year.
The 2nd Grade Parent Meeting will be on Monday, August 5th at 1:30 p.m. in your child’s classroom.
